The Agents Union: Why We Built a Home for Football Agents
It Started With a Question
In 2022, something happened that had never happened before: UEFA opened the doors of its Academy to football agents. We were the first Player Agent Programme - the first PAP cohort ever - licensed agents from different countries, different markets, and different backgrounds, brought together under one roof to learn.
Somewhere between the sessions, over coffee and long dinners, the same conversation kept coming back. We often discussed it, half as a joke and half in earnest: why not create something for us football agents?
Every other group in football has a home. Players have unions. Clubs have associations. Coaches, referees, even scouts - they all have somewhere to belong. Agents, the people who sit at the centre of almost every career and every transfer, had nothing. We worked alone, competed alone, and learned alone.
That question became The Agents Union.
What We Were Actually Looking For
When I look back, the goal was never complicated. We were looking for a community.
A place where agents learn from each other instead of guessing alone. Where a colleague who has done a deal in a market you have never touched picks up the phone and tells you how it actually works. Where the lessons that normally take a decade of trial and error get shared over a dinner table.
And honestly - we were looking for friendships. That might sound soft in an industry this hard, but it is the truth. Some of the strongest bonds in TAU started in that first classroom. Collegial collaboration, real help when you need it, people who want you to succeed even though, on paper, you are competitors.
That is the heart of our why: proving that in a world defined by competition, you can still work with good morals and good ethics - and be better for it, not worse.
About the Reputation of This Profession
Let’s address it directly, because everyone thinks it and few say it out loud: the agent industry sometimes has a bad image.
Here is what I have learned after years in this profession: it is not all agents. It is not even most agents. It is a few - and unfortunately, the few who operate with poor ethics and poor morals tend to make the headlines, while the many who quietly do right by their players never do.
We built TAU for the many. Every member of this union is a licensed agent who has chosen to hold themselves to a standard - our Member Rules, the FIFA regulations, and something simpler than both: basic decency. We cannot change the headlines overnight. But we can build a community where the standard is visible, and let the work speak.
Who We Are Here For
TAU exists for the licensed agents of the world who are missing what we were missing: a place to connect with other agents, to keep improving, and to keep learning.
That is why education runs through everything we do. The industry changes fast - regulations, markets, the way clubs work - and no one can keep up alone. Together, we can. An agent who keeps learning is a better agent for their players, and a profession that keeps learning is a profession that earns respect.
Today we are 64+ members across 14 countries. We started with the community we know best - the UEFA Academy alumni - and soon we open our doors to all licensed agents worldwide.
The Journey Is the Point
From a recurring conversation in the first PAP cohort, to an association registered in Switzerland, to a growing global community - the journey has only confirmed what we suspected back in 2022: agents are stronger together.
We built a home for football agents because we needed one ourselves. If you are a licensed agent and you have ever felt the same - the door is open.
